Just idle WOW-killing speculation...

I've always been of the opinion that, gameplay-wise at least, WOW was just a MMORPG version of Diablo, just set in Azeroth. (Random instances vs Perpetual Gameworld notwithstanding).

Assuming that the Next Big Thing in MMorpgs will be World Of Starcraft (or whatever it will be called), don't you think that it could be an RPG version of Hellgate: London? Or rather, do you think that Bill Roper might have had a few snippets of inside info on any plans that Blizzard have in their bag for the the next MMO (and let's face it, you KNOW Blizzard are already planning ahead!).

Hunter: Terrans (My Engineer even turns invisible, like a Ghost).

Cabalist: Zerg (what is the Evoker if not a Cerebrate?).

Templar: Protoss (Zealot = Blademaster).

I know the setting will be different, and there will be far more options/classes/etc in WOS, with a much deeper gameworld, and everything about it will be perfect, and my imagination can't even begin to conceive what they will do with a next-gen MMORPG, but do you see where I'm going with this?

or ?|||While WoW is doing so strongly, blizzard won't put out another MMO.

Why waste time on splitting your fanbase between the two games, when you can keep them all on one.

Not to mention, they are putting out SC2 and have already said they won't be doing WoS|||I completely agree with you, but you must agree with me that Blizzard are already planning what will come next. Obviously, they are not going to cut WOW off in its prime, but with SC2 coming next year, SC would be an obvious next step (unless you are a WOD wisher). It may not come in the next year (hell, it may not come in the next 10 years :D ), but WOW will not last forever, and Blizzard needs something to replace it.

I just found it noteworthy that the man who helped shape WOW decided to release a game with three factions that (as I saw it) had parallels with a potential WOS.|||This was a while ago but didn't Blizzard at one point mention that if they were to release a new MMO it would be something 'new', ie not based on any of their existing IPs? I think they even hinted that they had already started working on it.

At any rate, the Next Big Thing for me will be AoC.|||a mmorpg produced by those weirdos at flagshipstudios now that would be fun i think i'd subscribe only to hunt weird bugs.

seriously though, i hope HG:L was the last game this company produced.|||Bless you, twoflower. You are an incredibly sensitive man, who inspires joy-joy feelings in all those around you.

LA, I don't know about a new IP. That seems like an unnecessary risk for Blizzard, especially when they have a game as huge as SC2 coming up. Remember, they have "Project Hydra" on the go (the top-secret, unannounced third game). My take is that SC2 will finish with all factions rounding on each other, setting the scene for a three-way SC MMORPG (with added Xel'Naga).

Only time will tell how badly I've got this wrong. :D|||I thought HGL counted as an RPG?|||The problem with World of Starcraft would be its massive setting and modern army considerations. Most individuals don't figure prominently in the galactic war concept, at least not in a way that makes sense for a rpg. A MMORTS would make a hell of a lot more sense. However, current technology is probably not good enough (poor graphics, bland planets) to allow thousands of players to simultaneously command their own battalions across many planets and in space combat.

Think of the Battlefield games, but on steroids in terms of scope.|||Quote:

There was speculation a while back because they were advertising for "Next-gen MMO developers" which I think was just for WoW.

Sure, they may have plans for future MMO's, but until WoW starts dipping severely in sub's, I doubt they will start anything MMO related.|||I cannot wait to kill space slugs with a space sticks at low levels, I tell you.
