Do you find the classes too...extremist?

I'm not sure if I am the anyone with this experience.

For example, the only way to survive (IMHO) as Blademaster, is to kill as quick as possible in close range. Gun/Sword combination is useless. There is no concept of defense, no concept of maneuvering (because of the imprecise collision). You just find a combo which gives you the most DPS, go in and whack.

An evoker is slightly more interesting, but it's all just variety of ranged attacks. I have tried a gun/focus evoker before but the damage output is ridiculous. I cannot even cast spells while firing my gun. (or am I wrong in that? Got to find out)

The marksman is only shooting - there's a lot of variety of guns, but it seems that high-interrupt, auto-assault rifles are just effective for all cases.

It's just unlike Diablo II, there is more than a way to play a class. For example, the Amazon - you can use a javelin/shield combo for close range attack with Jab, then when you need to, you switch to Lightning Fury. The Paladin can play as a Shockadin, with his Holy Thunder and ranged attacks.

The Guardian cannot inflicts too much damage. Their only role seems to be tanking, not killing.

I really think they should just revert to three classes Templar, Cabalist and Hunter, and merge the skill trees for a more interesting play-style.

Am I the only one to feel this way?|||The classes would still have crappy skillsets even if you merged all of them together, the skills just arent as numerous, creative, or fun as diablo 2's.

I mean it sickens me looking at all the passives, everything just sucks. And then its like they took the skills from diablo 2 that no one uses like "inner site" and plastered them everywhere. Mythos isnt any better, all they can do now is fill the skillbars with cop-out filler skills.|||Yes, the skills in mythos and HGL do leave a lot to be desired.

I remember when I started playing the mythos alpha and leveled up, and was like "well none of these skills are actually interesting. Maybe when I get to clvl 15, but otherwise I don't think it matters what I put points in". Turns out HGL is just the same.|||I would have to both agree and disagree with this thread. I think there is some decent variety to the types of classes. Hunter get engineer / marksmen. Two totally different classes with the similarity of both using guns. Then within two classes there are further specializations. For example you could spec grenade build or damage build in marksmen. Also you could use rapid ripe guns or pimp nade launchers, and switch to sniper when far away. Summoner and evoker are totally different, Blademaster and Guard are pretty similar.

As for skills:

Blade master can go WW build, Throwing build, Crit build, or charge build. which is a lot more options than barb had in D2 since his skill specialization occured in weapons as aposed to skills. Blademaster can also dual weild, sword n board, or gun build. In d2 I would say that Barb had more filler skills with his useless shouts when compared to HGL.

Now evoker on the other hand has some terrible frackin skills especially when compared to the sorc from D2. With the sorc I was a glass cannon. I would wipe out entire heards of mobs but get one or two shotted. I dont know what the evoker is supposed to be even after playing through normal with one.|||Quote:

There are many builds with evoker as well. Close range one that focuses on venom armor, firestorm, lightning field. Or a long range one that focuses on spectral lash. Or anywhere in between. If anything, evoker has the most variety of builds.

Also remeber in this game, the guns are like skills with many different uses and purposes. Way better than Diablo.|||Hannibal's right. The weapons are the skills. The summoner for instance (the only class I've finished the game with) has skills relating to summoning, but virtually no direct damage skills. But she has an awesome variety of class-specific weapons, many of them with powers equivalent to spells in similar games. Attacking with a swarm of insects, mind-controlling an enemy, coating the ground with flame, and many more, with the possibility of equipping up to six weapons at once and easily swapping between them.

THAT'S where the build variety comes from.|||The MM has several varients. I'm built around a fast firing rifle. Yet I could have easily built myself around an AoE weapon. You could just as easily go with pistols or shotgun style weapons. Each have their advantages.

I prefer the rifle for being a good all purpose weapon.

AoE weapons may not damage a single monster as well but damned if groups have no chance. So you work under the idea of room sweeping instead of aiming. Works just as well

Pistols I can't speak of but I know there are a lot of people enjoying them greatly so they must be good however they're used.

And a shotgun, who can argue with that? So you can't kill at range, nothing up close has a chance. Fire and maneuver and close in and kill them.

A guild that partied regularly could easily mix and match styles and be deadly in depth. Use small unit tactics and you'd be unstoppable|||I don't like general purpose rifle so I have one set up for long range with venom lance, crazy dps that auto-aims. When the mobs swarm me, I switch to dual raptor rapid fire/redirect proc for close range AoE. Venom lance power consumption is no good for close range sustained fire approach. Then I have my thermal canon that gives them long range AoE of hell.|||I do believe all classes can be played with a wide variety of playstyles. Sniping enemies from a distance and run back into the shadows? Charge in with dual machine guns ripping through stuff? Ignite entire areas with the help of the friendly invisible Airforce? That's a Marksman for you, just one example.

However to concede to one point from the OP: Some classes clearly focus on offense and some clearly on defense/tanking, particularly the Guardian. However as some others pointed out, you still can equip your Leroy Jenkins-Marksman with damage absorbing armor and convert him/her into a decent tank that way. The items are part of the build in this game.|||Quote:

As it was in Diablo II. Maybe not as much, but most build "guides" I have seen for Diablo II included a list of "must-have" equipment for that build. The equipment usually strengthened areas where the build was generally weak.

A passage within a passage..

Didn't really think that it was possible, but this screenshot speaks for itself:

|||Yeah, it have happend to myself a couple of times. I was just waiting for that triple passage, but I guess that would be overdoing it.|||You guys got luck...|||I've gotten a triple, and I've heard of others getting them too.|||even more luck.|||Yea, I've had that happen a few times too. One of the times it was 2 "elite passages" in a row, so it must not even check that.

Edit: Never had a triple passage though.|||I had a triple (hidden) passage last night. Unfortunately, the drops weren't especially worthy of all my crate hate. Still, was kind of nifty.|||I was there when Gert and ski stumbled upon the triple, then were kind enough to NOT portal me.

So yeah, three is possible.|||I've gotten 2 tripes and quite a few doubles.

Hidden > Elite > Elite I think... Or maybe there was 2 hiddens.|||Quote:

The game was so buggy you couldn't really tell who was where that evening

Way(s) to shorten time to collect items required in mini game

I guess most of you know this already, but I think I will post it anyways =X

When you complete a mini game, don't pick up the items yet! (Unless it is unique that you don't want to lose it due to lag) You can wait till the counter for new mini game reset and then pick the items up. Cause once when I finished a mini game and I was busy picking other stuff up. When I start to loot the items from the mini game I have completed two requirements for next mini game already

Nothing too special, but hope this helps.|||Having an with mods to make it deal every damage type in one of your weapon switches is good in regards to the mini game.

I have a question here, how can it be achieved though? For instance, I have a sniper rifle that deals 100 spectral damage only, will inserting tech with "Adds 7% poison damage" deal 7 extra poison damage that way?|||Yes.

If a weapon has enough mod slots, add % <element> damage is sufficient for the minigame.|||What is the base chance of causing that 7% poison damage though? Will it happen every time? I ask as a sniper rifle could be a bad choice for chance-based damage, as it only fires every couple of seconds, whilst some guns can fire 600 times a minute. That's a lot of chances!

Of course, this point is moot if the damage is caused all the time.

They are indeed talking about the mods that add extra damage to each hit.

Although the damage procs are very nice in their own way, with the AoE carnage they add |||Quote:

The 7% poison damage applies to every chance, however you won't be able to actually cause the poison status effect unless you additionally mod the weapon with a poison attack strength mod (or the weapon already has that mod).|||I've just got a rocket launcher on switch that deals every type of damage except spectral. Works wonders for the minigame.

It is definately a good idea to wait. I finished a minigame last night and gobbled up the three mods it spit out. Then the icons reset and I need 3 mods! It takes forever for mobs to drop mods...|||If you have it on your armour (or should I say 'armor'):

Thorns damage counts!

It would appear that this is because the damage needs only to be done to the enemy before it is killed - not be the type of damage that kills it.

I hope that makes sense!|||Explosive destructible items count too (for fire damage).

Twas the Night before...

Twas the night before Hellgate, and all through the dark

Not a demon was stirring, not even a spark.

The bones were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that dried flesh soon would be there;

The ravergers were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of virgins danced in their heads;

And Hellmeat in it's puddle, and Sydonia in his crap

Had just settled down for a long evil nap

When out of the flames there arose such a clatter,

Demons sprang from their holes to see what was the matter.

Away to the edges they flew like a flash,

Tore open the ground and threw fire like mad.

The bloodmoon on the breast of the new-fallen dead

Gave the luster of mid-day to see zombies and undead

When, what to their wondering eyes should appear,

But two human figures, and robots in the rear,

With Strofer and Imperator, so armored and quick,

the demons knew in a moment it would get thick.

More rapid than lightning Strofer's sword did swing.

Demons ran hither and thither, dying and shrieking

For Stro was singing, and his shield all bespattered

Demon after demon were stabbed and beheaded

Imp was laughing, his drone was aroar

Demons were screaming and crying "No More!"

And Stro laughed and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Raverager! now, Zombie! now, Hellmeat and Lasher!

On, Gremlins on Darkspawn! on, Imps and Stalker!

To the top of the rift! to the bottom of the wall!

Now slash away! Burn away! Perish damn you all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

and demons meet shield, sword and guns eye to eye,

its death to all as the holy fire flies,

With Imperator's guns hundreds fall and die.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard towards the end

The stomping and moaning of each massive step.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Down the firey hell, Sydonia came with a bound.

He was dressed all in black, from his head to his foot,

And his skin all red and was all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of heads he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a very evil with skulls around his neck.

His eyes -- how they glowed! his horns all curvy!

His hooves on fire, and teeth all pointy!

His cruel little mouth was drawn up like a snarl,

And the beard of his chin was as black as coal;

The stump of a leg he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke encircled his head made quite the stink;

For Imperator and Strofer the fight was on,

and Hell laughed at them, and said "Bring it on!"

From the top of the wall to the bottom of the pit

Never had Hell, seen such a fit

Death all around them, smoke and the ruin

Imperator and Strofer, in the act of pursuin

Finally the last, Hells final king

With a yell of rage Sydonia casts fire in rings

He battles he does, with Stro and the Imp

The battle was joined, and found the two at the hip

With a final shout of wrath and rage in the air

The devil himself began to feel fear

Strofer's shield sparking with hellfire's glare

While Imperator's guns shot holes in his rear

A loud cry and the helllord quickly retreated

he ran like a sissy, Stro and Imp were elated

Then the two trudged off, their hard work was done

And went to the pub and drank some pints down

Merry Christmas all!!!!

MP patch

Please stop double posting. The game should automatically update for you.|||is there a site where i can download the patches manually?|||You have 2 options, you can dl the patch from the game and when you get the error dont click on it, minimise and check your tmp folder which is inside your Hellgate folder.

If the tmp folder is getting bigger(right click and check to see) then that means the patch is still downloading, wait for it to finish its about 90mb.

If that doesnt work you can dl the patch at the official Hellgate:London forums look for infidels posts in the Network section.

Interesting stuff I have encountered recently

1. Fake deadend

I suppose the screenshots will tell the story

Tell me if the screenshots don't work though.

2. Weird mod level

Sometime ago I was messing around in Covent Garden Station with my level 36 marksman, and I notice the palladium required for the enhanced (white) mods went sky high (the level 27-41 ones which I always see are only ~4000). And when I investigate further more the mod level has jumped so high too:

I suppose this is a bug or some sort? Or do I miss anything?|||I've seen that before in the passageways....|||I've not encountered the blind passageway problem, but interesting glitch. The mod prices are a little bewildering. How are these prices set? I've sold a mod for a pittance to the npc, but then notice the npc is selling the same mod for considerably more (40k in some instances). This makes absolutely no sense from a market standpoint. I save all my mods now - the npc can go out and farm his own, for all I care.|||Quote:

I suppose it is determined by mod level. For instance, a level 1-14 mod is much cheaper than this 58-71 one.|||they're paying homage to the hidden passages in zelda, or it's just a glitch|||I've seen those mod prices too. It only happens in nightmare mode... Maybe its a precursor to hell mode level 50-80?

Chompzilla

One of the more enjoyable bugs I've found. Note that this isn't the same as when you hack at a chomper during transformation, this one was enormous when I got there. From today--this chomper was about 3x the size of the morphoids they usually turn into:

|||Looks like you are the dinosaur slayer! |||Consider resizing your pics for the mercy of the forums. Hurray guardians!|||That's wicked! Are you able to consistently recreate this?|||How cool a pet would that be for a summoner |||It's like David and Goliath. Geez, what a mess.

On a general note,it would be good if you guys would use smaller pics. Not so small that I have to use my glasses to read it, but a little smaller than these.

Thanks|||I think the big pics are great, personally.

Maybe post them as a URL instead so those with the 12" monitors dont get bent out of shape.|||It's a bandwidth issue, not a monitor one.

Link to large images or make them no bigger than 480x640. Links are preferred|||cool Pics but yeah there are many free photo editors out there use one. speaking of odd sized baddies, I was in new bridge last night and one of the super tall guys was oversized to the point he looked like he was scraping the broken down bridge remains and I was still 50 meters away. It was almost as it it's size was such that it was right on top of me even though it really wasn't. It was odd but I didn't think to sceeny it or it would fit this thread perfect.|||Cool pics. I dont see much of those.
